According to the legends, it is believed that “Har-ki_doon” means “valley of the gods”. “Har” is one of the names of lord Shiva and “Dun” is a valley spread in the Himalayas. It is believed that lord Shiva used to stay at “har-ki-doon”. One day Someshwara devta, the present deity of this region, arrived in the valley from Kashmir and requested lord Shiva to move away so he can be sole lord of the valley. Lord shiva followed his request and moved away.

ABOUT THE TREK

Surrounded with beautiful towering peaks, it is one of the most beautiful Himalayan treks in Uttarakhand. Also known as “valley of the gods”, har-ki-doon is wonderful trek for both, the beginners as well as experienced Himalayan trekkers. It is best done throughout the year except monsoon and is accessible through Govind National Park. One can notice a great variety of flora and fauna. The trek offers you to experience the local lifestyle while walking through pine forests, rivers, glaciers and ancient villages.

Drive from Dehradun to Sankri/Saur (1920mt) through the Yamuna and Tons valleys across the Yamuna bridge and eye pleasing view of beautiful dense pine forests. Trekkers will reach Sankri in the evening, which is the best time to look out for the sun setting behind the mountain ranges. Sankri base camp gives a beautiful view of all the four peaks in swargarohini range. Overnight camping in sankri under the clear sky covered with millions of stars. Participants are expected to arrive at Sankri base camp on their own with an additional cost. BornFree Treks will arrange for taxi to sankri base camp from dehradun.

Early morning drive from Sankri to Taluka through dense forests and water streams gushing down the roads.Taluka is a small village with traditional house structures and a few dhaba corners serving simple yet delicious food. Trekkers will be given some rest and the trek will start from Taluka. This 14km trek has everything in it, as the trekkers will walk on rocky surfaces, traditional wooden bridges and green trials with supin river flowing on the left side. One can notice the presence of different animals and birds as well. The great thing about this trek is, that trekkers will get many spots with fresh drinking water streams. The trekkers will reach Seema via Gangar village in the evening. The trekkers will camp on a small green field just before seema.

Today is a long day for trekkers as they will be covering 12km and will be a much steeper ascent. This trail will give some beautiful views of snow capped mountains, waterfalls, meadows, flora and fauna. There will be many wooden bridges that the trekkers will be crossing. The trekkers will get the view of whole har-ki-doon valley during the later part of the trail and they will reach har-ki-doon valley by the evening. The camp will be set at the base of har-ki-doon peak. One can notice swargarohini, hata and other Himalayan peaks in the background with har-ki-doon and ruinsara rivers flowing on both sides.

Explore the beauty of har-ki-doon valley with breathtaking views of swargarohini range, jumdhar glacier and great variety of flora and fauna. Beware of snow leoperds. One can either stay at har-ki-doon camp or can trek towards beautiful morinda lake. Har-ki-doon is a treat for Himalayan photographers as it gives you some amazing views of mountains, glaciers, rivers, meadows and much more.

The har-ki-doon valley is such an amazing place, that trekkers find it difficult to pull themselves out of the valley. Trekkers will be descending early morning towards Seema after having breakfast. After reaching seema, the trekkers will camp there.

Trek for the last time from Seema to Taluka through dense forests. The trekkers will reach taluka bu afternoon and will drive towards sankri base camp on same day. Day 6 will be the last day for camping and the trekkers will stay at sankri.

Board a bus or taxi from Sankri to Dehradun early morning.

What to take

Packing Refuge Based Keep it simple and minimal “A heavy pack is a pack filled with anxiety.” Freud.Keeping your pack weight to a minimum is the key to a successful trek. We recommend people joining any of our treks where you will be sleeping in gites (hostels) or refuges be equipped with the following:

 Technical equipment Comfortable walking boots or shoes (3 or 4 season)

 Walking poles (definitely two) Clothing suggestions

 Fleece Waterproof jacket (or big plastic poncho)

 Waterproof over trousers

 Lightweight puffer jacket for evening comfort in the higher refuges

 Warm gloves and hat (for early starts)

 Sun hat or peaked cap

 Sunglasses

 One pair shorts

 One pair lightweight walking trousers

 Two T-shirts

 Good quality walking socks

Other essential items

 40 – 60 litre Rucksack

Light weight towel

 Waterproof ruck sack cover or waterproof bags to keep your things dry

 Sun block for face and lips (Factor 50)

 Personal First Aid kit (plasters, Compeed for blisters, paracetamol)

 Roll of toilet paper

 Water bottle or Platypus type hydration system – 1.5 to 2 litres

 Penknife

 Head torch for use in refuges

 Survival blanket (light foil blanket to keep injured people warm).

Optional items Change of clothing to include:

 underwear, tracksuit bottoms, dry shirt, spare socks (think of things that you can wear to both dinner and bed so you don’t need to change)

 Camera Paperback novel (light!)

 Snack bars/dried fruit/chocolate

 Waterproof map case

 Ear plugs (there will inevitably be snorers in the refuge)

 Buff – good for blocking out light and noise while sleeping, keeping your neck warm, holding your hair etc.
